Vaping etiquette: Do’s and Don’ts in Public Spaces

Vaping is only for 18+ adults and is a much better alternative to smoking, but it’s always important to remember that not everyone vapes. To ensure your vaping is respectful and considerate of others, here are some do’s and don’ts for vaping outside your home.
Do's
- Be mindful of your surroundings: Always be aware where you are vaping. Public spaces such as parks, beaches and outdoor cafes may be smokefree and vape free, so it’s best to look for signage or simply ask staff.
- Respect non-vapers: Many people may not appreciate that vapour cloud or the smell of e-liquids. Try to vape in designated vaping areas or away from crowds.
- Follow local regulations: New Zealand has specific regulations regarding vaping. Make sure you check the rules before puffing.
- Dispose of vape waste properly: Be a tidy kiwi and recycle your vaping device and dispose of used sticks and pods into rubbish bins and never the street.
Don'ts
- Don’t vape in public indoor spaces: Unless an ‘approved vaping premises’, indoor public spaces such as restaurants, pubs, shops and public transport prohibit vaping. Respect these rules and if in doubt, simply ask a staff member.
- Don’t assume everyone is comfortable: Just because vaping is allowed in a particular area, it doesn’t mean everyone around you is okay with your cloud. Be considerate and ask if it’s alright to vape, especially with those in close quarters..
- Don’t blow vapour towards others: Directing your vapour cloud toward others is not only rude but can also cause discomfort. Always blow vapour away from people.
- Don’t ignore signs: If you see a vape-free sign, respect it.
- Don’t vape around children: Vaping around children is a no-no in any setting. If children are around vape elsewhere.
